Tofu Preparation
Press the Tofu
Place the block of firm tofu on a cutting board. Use a clean kitchen towel to wrap the tofu and place a heavy object on top (like a skillet or a few cans) to press out excess moisture. Let it sit for about 15-20 minutes.
Cut the Tofu
Once pressed, remove the tofu from the towel and slice it into cubes or rectangles, about 1-inch thick.
Season the Tofu
In a mixing bowl, combine cornstarch, salt, and black pepper. Toss the tofu pieces in the mixture until evenly coated.
Frying
Heat the Oil
In a large frying pan or wok, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot. You can test if the oil is ready by dropping in a small piece of tofu; it should sizzle immediately.
Fry the Tofu
Carefully add the coated tofu pieces to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry in batches if necessary. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
Drain the Tofu
Once fried, use a slotted spoon to transfer the tofu to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Garnishing
Garnish and Serve
Finely chop the green onions. Sprinkle the fried tofu with chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Serve hot as an appetizer or a side dish.
