Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Soak the Rice

Rinse the glutinous rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Then soak the rice in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.

  2. 2

    Prepare Banana Leaves

Soak the banana leaves in warm water for about 15 minutes to make them pliable. Cut them into squares or rectangles of appropriate size to wrap the sticky rice.

  3. 3

    Prepare Pandan Leaves

Wash the pandan leaves and tie them in a knot or cut them into smaller sections to release their aroma.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Cook the Rice

Drain the soaked rice and combine it with 2.5 cups of water and 1 tsp of salt in a rice cooker or pot. Add the pandan leaves. Cook until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed, about 20-25 minutes.

  2. 5

    Add Coconut Milk and Sugar

Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large mixing bowl. Stir in the coconut milk and sugar until well combined. Allow it to cool slightly.

  3. 6

    Wrap the Rice

Place a portion of the sticky rice on a piece of banana leaf, fold the leaf over, and secure it with kitchen twine or toothpicks. Repeat until all rice is wrapped.

Steaming

  1. 7

    Steam the Wrapped Rice

Place the wrapped rice parcels in a steamer basket lined with banana leaves. Steam for about 30-40 minutes, or until heated through and fragrant.

Serving

  1. 8

    Serve the Sticky Rice

Unwrap the banana leaves and serve the sticky rice warm. Top with roasted peanuts and sesame seeds if desired.
