Breadsticks
Method
Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Dough
In a bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy. In a separate large bowl, mix the flour, salt, garlic powder, and Italian herbs. Pour the yeast mixture and olive oil into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- 2
Knead the Dough
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- 3
Shape the Breadsticks
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long stick and place on a greased baking sheet.
- 4
Add Toppings
Brush the tops of the breadsticks with olive oil and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Optionally, dust with more garlic powder or Italian herbs.
- 5
Bake
Bake the breadsticks in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
- 6
Prepare the Sauce
While the breadsticks are baking, prepare the tomato sauce by heating a can of crushed tomatoes in a saucepan. Add salt, pepper, and any desired herbs. Simmer for about 10 minutes.
- 7
Serve
Once the breadsticks are baked, serve them warm alongside the tomato sauce for dipping.
