Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until well mixed.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

  5. 5

    Add Boiling Water

Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin.

  6. 6

    Bake the Cakes

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the Cakes

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Frosting Preparation

  1. 8

    Beat Cream Cheese and Butter

In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and unsalted butter together until smooth and creamy.

  2. 9

    Add Cocoa Powder

Sift in the cocoa powder and blend until well incorporated.

  3. 10

    Add Powdered Sugar

Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing well after each addition until the frosting is thick and smooth.

  4. 11

    Flavor the Frosting

Mix in the vanilla extract and add milk as needed to achieve a spreadable consistency.

Assembling the Cake

  1. 12

    Layer the Cake

Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting on top.

  2. 13

    Add Second Layer

Place the second cake layer on top of the frosted first layer, and frost the top and sides of the cake as desired.

  3. 14

    Decorate

Decorate with chocolate shavings or sprinkles if desired.
