Pita Bread Ingredients

Method

Pita Bread Directions

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water (about 110°F or 43°C) with sugar and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt, mixing well to ensure the salt is evenly distributed.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and add the foamy yeast mixture along with olive oil. Mix until the dough starts to come together.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed.

  5. 5

    First Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.

  6. 6

    Shape the Dough

Once risen, punch down the dough to release the air. Divide it into 8 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball. Cover with a damp cloth and let rest for 10-15 minutes.

  7. 7

    Roll Out Pitas

Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) with a baking stone or baking sheet inside. On a floured surface, roll each dough ball into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.

  8. 8

    Bake the Pitas

Carefully transfer the rolled dough to the hot baking stone/sheet and bake for 5-7 minutes until puffed and lightly browned. Remove and let cool on a wire rack.

  9. 9

    Serve

Enjoy your freshly baked pita bread warm or at room temperature. They can be served with dips, as sandwich wraps, or just enjoyed on their own.
