Filling

Phyllo Dough

Syrup

Method

Filling Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Nut Mixture

In a food processor, pulse together the walnuts, almonds, sugar, and cinnamon until coarsely ground. Be careful not to over-process. Set aside.

Phyllo Dough Preparation

  1. 2

    Prepare the Phyllo Dough

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Melt the unsalted butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Lay out the phyllo dough on a clean surface and cover with a damp towel to prevent drying out.

  2. 3

    Layer the Phyllo

Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Place one sheet of phyllo in the dish and brush with more butter. Repeat this process with about 8 sheets, brushing each layer with butter.

  3. 4

    Add Filling

Spread a layer of the nut mixture evenly over the phyllo layers. Continue layering phyllo sheets (about 6 sheets), brushing each with butter, followed by another layer of the nut mixture. Repeat until all the filling is used, ending with a final layer of phyllo (about 8 sheets) brushed with butter.

Baking

  1. 5

    Cut and Bake

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.

Syrup Preparation

  1. 6

    Prepare the Syrup

While the baklava is baking, combine the water, honey, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.

Finishing Touch

  1. 7

    Add Syrup

Once the baklava is done baking, immediately pour the syrup over it while it is still hot. Allow it to absorb the syrup for at least 2 hours before serving.
