Toppings
Method
Prepare the Caramelized Onions
- 1
Cook the Onions
In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onion and a pinch of salt. Cook for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.
Cook the Bacon
- 2
Fry the Bacon
In the same skillet (or a separate one), cook the applewood smoked bacon over medium heat until crispy, about 6-8 minutes. Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess fat.
Make the Burger Patties
- 3
Form the Patties
Divide the ground beef into two equal portions (about 1/4 lb each) and gently shape them into balls. Do not overwork the meat.
- 4
Smash the Patties
Preheat a large skillet or griddle over high heat. Place the beef balls in the skillet and immediately smash them down with a spatula to form thin patties. Season with salt and black pepper. Cook for about 3-4 minutes until a crust forms, then flip and top each patty with a slice of American cheese. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts.
