Base Preparation
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan and line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
Cream Butter and Sugars
In a large mixing bowl, beat together the unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
Add Eggs and Vanilla
Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract until combined.
Combine Dry Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
Mix Wet and Dry Ingredients
Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
Pour into Pan
Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan.
Chocolate Layer Preparation
Melt Chocolate
In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the semi-sweet chocolate chips and heavy cream. Stir until melted and smooth.
Spread Chocolate
Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the base layer in the baking pan, spreading it evenly.
Baking and Decoration
Bake the Checker Bar
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool and Cut
Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before lifting them out using the parchment paper. Cut into squares.
Decorate
In a small bowl, mix the powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Dust the top of the cooled bars with the mixture for decoration.
