Method
Cake Preparation
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, sift together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Combine Mixtures
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
Add Boiling Water
Carefully stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.
Bake the Cake
Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool the Cake
Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Frosting Preparation
Make the Frosting
In a medium bowl, beat the unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing until smooth.
Add Milk and Vanilla
Add the milk and vanilla extract, and continue to beat until the frosting is fluffy and spreadable.
Frost the Cake
Once the cakes are completely cooled, spread the frosting generously on top of one layer, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
