Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Slice the onion into thin rings. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add the onions. Cook until they are caramelized, about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  2. 2

    Cook the Beef

In a separate skillet, add the ground beef and season with salt and black pepper. Cook over medium-high heat until browned, breaking it into crumbles, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

  3. 3

    Combine Beef and Onions

Add the caramelized onions to the cooked beef and stir to combine. Cook for an additional 2 minutes to heat through.

  4. 4

    Assemble the Patty Melt

On one slice of rye bread, spread mayonnaise and mustard. Layer with the beef and onion mixture and top with cheese. Cover with another slice of rye bread.

  5. 5

    Cook the Sandwich

In the same skillet used for the beef, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwich in the skillet and grill until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Ensure the cheese is melted.

  6. 6

    Serve

Remove from skillet, slice in half, and serve hot.
