Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, mix warm water (110°F to 115°F) with sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.

  2. 2

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt.

  3. 3

    Make the Dough

Add the foamy yeast mixture and melted unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled in size.

Shaping and Baking

  1. 6

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

  2. 7

    Shape the Rolls

Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a round ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  3. 8

    Second Rise

Cover the rolls with a cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes until puffy.

  4. 9

    Prepare Egg Wash

In a small bowl, beat the egg with a tablespoon of milk to create the egg wash.

  5. 10

    Apply Egg Wash

Brush the tops of the rolls with the egg wash and sprinkle cornmeal on top.

  6. 11

    Bake the Rolls

Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.

  7. 12

    Cool

Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before serving.
