Method
For the Chicken Fried Steak
- 1
Prepare the Steaks
Tenderize the beef round steaks using a meat mallet to about 1/2 inch thickness. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
- 2
Set up the Breading Station
In one bowl, pour the buttermilk. In another bowl, mix flour with a pinch of salt and pepper. Beat the eggs in a third bowl.
- 3
Bread the Steaks
Dip each steak first in buttermilk, then in flour, then in beaten egg, and finally back in flour to create a thick crust.
- 4
Fry the Steaks
In a skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Fry the breaded steaks until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
For the Sausage Gravy
- 5
Cook the Sausage
In a separate skillet, brown the ground sausage over medium heat until fully cooked. Break it apart with a spatula.
- 6
Make the Gravy
Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage, stir to combine, and cook for about 2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the milk and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
- 7
Season the Gravy
Season the gravy with salt and black pepper to taste. Keep warm while preparing the rest of the dish.
For the Hash Browns and Eggs
