Cake Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). This ensures that the cakes bake evenly and develop a molten center.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Ramekins

Grease four ramekins with butter and dust with cocoa powder, shaking out the excess. This prevents the cakes from sticking.

  3. 3

    Melt the Chocolate and Butter

In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the semi-sweet chocolate and unsalted butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until melted and smooth.

Mixing the Batter

  1. 4

    Whisk Dry Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

  2. 5

    Combine Mixtures

Once the chocolate and butter mixture is melted, remove it from the microwave and let it cool slightly. Stir in the egg yolks and whole eggs one at a time until fully incorporated, then add the vanilla extract.

  3. 6

    Add Dry Ingredients

Gradually fold in the dry ingredients into the chocolate mixture until just combined. Be careful not to over-mix.

Baking

  1. 7

    Fill Ramekins

Evenly distribute the batter among the prepared ramekins, filling them about 3/4 full.

  2. 8

    Bake

Place the ramekins in the preheated oven and bake for 12-14 minutes, or until the edges are firm but the center is still soft.

Serving

  1. 9

    Cool and Serve

Remove the ramekins from the oven and let them cool for 1 minute. Carefully run a knife around the edges, then invert onto plates. Serve warm, preferably with ice cream or whipped cream.
