Spanish Rice

Method

Spanish Rice Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse and Soak Rice

Rinse the long-grain white rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 15 minutes, then drain.

  2. 2

    Sauté Aromatics

In a medium saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute.

  3. 3

    Cook Rice

Add the rinsed rice to the saucepan and stir to coat the rice with oil. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the rice is slightly toasted.

  4. 4

    Add Liquids and Seasoning

Pour in the tomato sauce and vegetable broth. Stir in ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil.

  5. 5

    Simmer Rice

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 20 minutes or until the rice is cooked and the liquid is absorbed.

  6. 6

    Fluff and Garnish

Remove the saucepan from heat. Let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork and stir in chopped cilantro before serving.

Beans Preparation

  1. 7

    Choose Your Beans

Select one of the following bean options: refried beans, charro beans, or black beans.

  2. 8

    Prepare Refried Beans

If using refried beans, heat them in a small saucepan over medium heat until warm. Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, and salt to taste.

  3. 9

    Prepare Charro Beans

If using charro beans, heat them in a saucepan with some water or broth and add chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt to taste. Simmer until warmed through.

  4. 10

    Prepare Black Beans

If using black beans, drain and rinse the canned beans. Heat them in a saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, and salt to taste. Simmer for about 5-10 minutes.
