Instructions for Beignets
- 1
Prepare the Dough
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter until warm and the butter is melted. Add the warm milk mixture to the flour mixture, followed by the egg. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- 2
Knead the Dough
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- 3
Roll and Cut the Dough
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it out to about 1/2-inch thick. Cut into squares or rectangles, about 2-3 inches in size.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a deep pot, heat the vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).
- 5
Fry the Beignets
Carefully drop the cut dough into the hot oil, a few at a time. Fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- 6
Serve
Dust warm beignets with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy with a cup of café au lait!
