Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the basmati rice in a large bowl and rinse it under cold running water until the water runs clear. This helps to remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky.

  2. 2

    Soak the Rice

After rinsing, soak the rice in enough water for about 30 minutes. This will help the grains expand and cook evenly.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Heat the Ghee

In a medium-sized saucepan, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat. Allow it to warm up for about 1 minute.

  2. 4

    Add Cumin Seeds

Once the ghee is hot, add the cumin seeds to the saucepan. Sauté them for about 30 seconds until they become fragrant and start to crackle.

  3. 5

    Add Water and Salt

Carefully add the water and salt to the saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat.

  4. 6

    Add the Rice

After the water reaches a rolling boil, drain the soaked rice and add it to the saucepan. Stir gently to combine.

  5. 7

    Simmer the Rice

Once the rice is added, reduce the heat to low. Cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid and let it simmer for about 15 minutes without lifting the lid.

  6. 8

    Fluff and Serve

After 15 minutes, turn off the heat and let the rice sit covered for another 5 minutes. Then, remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork. Serve warm.
