Burger Patty

Toppings

Method

Prepare the Burger Patty

  1. 1

    Mash the Beans

In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.

  2. 2

    Mix in Dry Ingredients

Add the oats, grated carrot, finely chopped bell pepper, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin powder, salt, and black pepper to the mashed beans. Mix until well combined.

  3. 3

    Add Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk the egg (or prepared flax egg if vegan). Add the olive oil and mix well. Pour this mixture into the bean mixture and stir until everything is well incorporated.

  4. 4

    Form Patties

Divide the mixture into two equal portions and form each portion into a patty shape. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes to firm up.

Cook the Patties

  1. 5

    Heat the Pan

Heat a non-stick skillet or frying pan over medium heat and add a little olive oil.

  2. 6

    Cook the Patties

Once the oil is hot, carefully place the patties in the skillet. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and heated through.

Assemble the Burger

  1. 7

    Toast the Buns

Optional: Toast the whole wheat burger buns in the same skillet or a toaster until lightly browned.

  2. 8

    Add Toppings

On the bottom half of each bun, place a lettuce leaf, followed by the cooked patty, sliced tomato, and avocado. Top with ketchup and mustard, then finish with the top half of the bun.
