Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the onions and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside in a bowl.

Batter Preparation

  1. 2

    Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Whisk together until evenly mixed.

  2. 3

    Add Water

Gradually add the cold water to the dry ingredients, stirring until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep pot or fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip the onion rings into the batter, making sure they are fully coated.

  3. 6

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry until they are golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.

  4. 7

    Drain and Cool

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Let them cool slightly.

Serving

  1. 8

    Serve

Serve the onion rings hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch or ketchup.
