Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Ziti

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the ziti pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Sauce Preparation

  1. 2

    Prepare the Sauce

In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil. Once heated, add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Cheese Mixture Preparation

  1. 3

    Mix the Cheese

In a large bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and grated Parmesan cheese. Mix until well combined and set aside.

Assembly and Baking

  1. 4

    Assemble the Baked Ziti

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large baking dish, spread half of the sauce on the bottom. Layer half of the cooked ziti over the sauce, followed by half of the ricotta mixture, and half of the shredded mozzarella. Repeat the layers with the remaining sauce, ziti, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella cheese.

  2. 5

    Add Toppings

Sprinkle the additional cup of shredded mozzarella and dried parsley on top.

  3. 6

    Bake

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the top is bubbly and golden brown.

  4. 7

    Serve

Let the baked ziti sit for about 10 minutes before serving. Cut into squares and enjoy!
