Method
Caramel Sauce Preparation
- 1
Make the Caramel
In a small saucepan, combine 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon of water. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring gently until the sugar dissolves.
- 2
Caramelize the Sugar
Continue to cook without stirring until the mixture turns a deep amber color. Remove from heat immediately to prevent burning.
- 3
Coat the Flan Dish
Quickly pour the caramel into the bottom of a round flan mold or cake pan, tilting the pan to coat the sides. Set aside to cool and harden.
Flan Base Preparation
- 4
Blend Ingredients
In a blender, combine the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, large eggs, and vanilla extract. Blend on high speed until smooth and well combined.
- 5
Pour into Mold
Pour the flan mixture over the hardened caramel in the mold.
- 6
Prepare for Baking
Place the flan mold in a larger baking dish. Fill the baking dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold.
- 7
Bake the Flan
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- 8
Cool and Refrigerate
Remove the flan from the oven and let it cool at room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- 9
Serve
To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it. Invert onto a serving plate and allow the caramel to drizzle over the top.
