Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Thoroughly rinse the basmati rice under cold running water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and helps the rice to cook evenly.

  2. 2

    Chop the Vegetables

Finely chop the onion, garlic, ginger, and carrot. Set aside the green peas.

  3. 3

    Prepare Herbs

Chop the fresh cilantro and set aside for garnishing.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Heat Oil

In a large pot, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Sauté Onion and Spices

Add the chopped onion to the pot and sauté until translucent. Then add cumin seeds, cardamom pods, cloves, and bay leaf. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until fragrant.

  3. 6

    Add Garlic and Ginger

Stir in the minced garlic and ginger, cooking for an additional minute until they are fragrant.

  4. 7

    Cook Vegetables

Add the chopped carrot and green peas to the pot. Stir well and cook for about 5 minutes.

  5. 8

    Add Rice and Water

Add the rinsed basmati rice, water, turmeric powder, and salt to the pot. Bring to a boil.

  6. 9

    Simmer

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and water is absorbed.

  7. 10

    Fluff and Garnish

Remove the pot from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with chopped cilantro before serving.
