Chapatti Dough

Method

Preparing the Dough

  1. 1

    Mixing Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, salt, and oil. Mix well to ensure the salt is evenly distributed.

  2. 2

    Adding Water

Gradually add water in small amounts to the flour mixture while mixing it with your hand or a wooden spoon. Continue to add water until a soft dough begins to form.

  3. 3

    Kneading the Dough

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    Resting the Dough

Cover the kneaded dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 20-30 minutes. This allows the gluten to relax, making it easier to roll out.

Cooking Chapatti

  1. 5

    Dividing the Dough

After resting, divide the dough into equal-sized balls (about the size of a golf ball).

  2. 6

    Rolling the Chapatti

On a lightly floured surface, take one dough ball and flatten it slightly with your fingers. Using a rolling pin, roll it out into a thin, round disc, about 6-8 inches in diameter.

  3. 7

    Cooking on Skillet

Heat a tava or a flat skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the rolled chapatti on the skillet.

  4. 8

    Puffing the Chapatti

Cook for about 30 seconds or until small bubbles start to form on the surface. Flip it over and cook for another 30 seconds. Press gently with a spatula to help it puff up.

  5. 9

    Finishing Touch

Remove the chapatti from the skillet and place it in a container lined with a clean cloth to keep warm. Repeat the rolling and cooking process for the remaining dough balls.
