Make the Lemon-Anise Syrup
In a small saucepan, combine sugar and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Add lemon zest and anise seeds, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Strain the mixture into a jar and let it cool.

Prepare the Grapefruit and Lime
Cut the grapefruit and lime in half. Juice one half of the grapefruit and one half of the lime, discarding the seeds.

Assemble the Drink
In a glass filled with ice, mix together 2 oz of lemon-anise syrup, 2 oz of grapefruit juice, and 2 oz of lime juice. Top it off with ginger beer and stir gently.

Garnish and Serve
Garnish with a grapefruit or lime slice on the rim of the glass and serve immediately.
