Method

Preparation

1

Rinse the Wild Rice

Place the wild rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse it under cold running water for about 1-2 minutes. This helps to remove any debris or excess starch.

2

Prepare the Cooking Liquid

In a medium-sized saucepan, combine 3 cups of water and 1 tsp of salt. Optionally, you can add 1 tbs of butter for extra flavor.

Cooking

3

Bring to a Boil

Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the water to a boil.

4

Add the Wild Rice

Once the water is boiling, carefully add the rinsed wild rice to the pot. Stir briefly to ensure the rice is evenly distributed.

5

Simmer the Rice

Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let the rice simmer for 45-60 minutes, or until the grains are tender and have split open. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

6

Add Optional Vegetables

If using, in the last 15 minutes of cooking, add the chopped onions, celery, and mushrooms to the rice. These will add flavor and texture.

Finishing Touches

7

Fluff and Serve

Once the wild rice is cooked, remove it from the heat and let it sit covered for an additional 5-10 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork and stir in chopped parsley before serving.
