Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Soak the Beans

Rinse the dried navy beans under cold water to remove any impurities. Place the beans in a large bowl, cover with water, and let them soak overnight (or for at least 8 hours). Drain and rinse the beans before cooking.

  2. 2

    Cook the Beans

In a large pot, add the soaked and drained beans and 6 cups of fresh water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 1 hour, or until the beans are tender. Drain the beans and set aside.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Bacon and Onion

In a large skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon from the skillet and crumble it into small pieces. In the same skillet, sauté the chopped onion in the bacon fat until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Baking

  1. 4

    Combine Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked beans, crumbled bacon, sautéed onion, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, apple cider vinegar, salt, and black pepper. Stir until all ingredients are well combined.

  2. 5

    Bake the Beans

Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Transfer the bean mixture into a large baking dish. Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the sauce is thick and bubbly.
