Preparation Steps

  1. 1

    Prepare the Mushrooms

Rehydrate the dried candy cap mushrooms in warm water for about 30 minutes until they are soft. Drain and chop them finely.

  2. 2

    Cook the Filling

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and add the chopped candy cap mushrooms and diced green apples. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the apples are tender.

  3. 3

    Make the Sugar Mixture

In another saucepan, combine granulated sugar, heavy cream, and a pinch of salt. Stir over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved, then bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.

  4. 4

    Combine and Flavor

Add the mushroom-apple mixture to the sugar mixture. Stir in the vanilla extract. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring constantly.

  5. 5

    Set the Pie

Pour the mixture into a greased pie dish and spread evenly. Let it cool at room temperature for about 1 hour, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours to set.

  6. 6

    Serve

Once set, slice the sugar pie and serve chilled or at room temperature. Enjoy the unique flavor of candy cap mushrooms paired with green apples!
