Prepare the Onions
Peel the onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set aside.

Make the Batter
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Gradually add the beer (or sparkling water) while whisking until the batter is smooth.

Heat the Oil
In a deep pot or fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).

Coat the Onion Rings
Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring they are well-coated.

Fry the Onion Rings
Carefully place the coated onion rings in the hot oil, frying in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per batch.

Drain and Serve
Remove the onion rings from the oil and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
