Directions

1

Prepare the Lentils

Rinse the black lentils under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak them in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.

2

Cook the Lentils

In a large pot, add the soaked lentils and 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 30-40 minutes until the lentils are soft.

3

Prepare the Tempering

In a separate pan, heat some oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle. Add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

4

Add Spices and Tomato

Add ginger, garlic, and green chilies to the pan. Sauté for 2-3 minutes. Then add turmeric powder, coriander powder, and the pureed tomato. Cook for another 5 minutes.

5

Combine and Simmer

Add the tempered mixture to the cooked lentils. Stir well and add salt and garam masala. Let it simmer for another 10-15 minutes.

6

Finish and Serve

Stir in lemon juice and garnish with fresh chopped cilantro before serving.
