Dough

Toppings (optional)

Method

Preparing the Dough

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water (1 cup) and granulated sugar (2 tablespoons). Sprinkle the active dry yeast (2 tablespoons) over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour (4 cups) and salt (1 teaspoon).

  3. 3

    Combine Ingredients

In a separate bowl, mix the milk (1 cup) and unsalted butter (1 tablespoon) until the butter is melted. Allow it to cool slightly before adding the yeast mixture and the egg (1 large). Stir until combined.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.

Shaping and Baking the Buns

  1. 6

    Shape the Buns

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into equal portions (about 12 pieces). Shape each piece into a smooth ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  2. 7

    Second Rise

Cover the shaped buns with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

  3. 8

    Preheat the Oven

While the buns are rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  4. 9

    Egg Wash (Optional)

If using, beat an egg (1 large) and brush it over the tops of the buns. Sprinkle sesame seeds (2 tablespoons) on top if desired.

  5. 10

    Bake the Buns

Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
