Method
Cooking the Pasta
- 1
Boil the Water
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil over high heat.
- 2
Cook the Pasta
Add the penne pasta to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 11-13 minutes.
- 3
Drain the Pasta
Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside, reserving a cup of pasta water.
Making the Sauce
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
- 5
Sauté the Garlic
Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- 6
Add Tomatoes
Add the canned whole tomatoes, crushing them with a spoon. Stir well.
- 7
Season the Sauce
Add salt and black pepper. Let the sauce simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 8
Add Fresh Basil
Tear the fresh basil leaves and add them to the sauce. Stir to combine.
- 9
Combine Pasta and Sauce
Add the drained penne pasta to the sauce, tossing to coat. If the sauce is too thick, add reserved pasta water a little at a time until desired consistency is reached.
- 10
Serve
Serve hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese.
