Crispy Calamari

Spicy Marinara Sauce

Method

Crispy Calamari

  1. 1

    Prepare the Calamari

Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels.

  2. 2

    Create the Coating

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well.

  3. 3

    Dredge the Calamari

Dip the calamari rings into the buttermilk and then dredge them in the flour mixture, ensuring they are well coated.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Fry the Calamari

Fry the calamari in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Spicy Marinara Sauce

  1. 6

    Sauté Garlic

In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.

  2. 7

    Add Tomatoes and Spices

Add the canned crushed tomatoes, red pepper flakes, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine and let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes.

  3. 8

    Adjust Seasoning

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning with more salt and black pepper if needed. Keep warm until ready to serve.
