Method

Preparing the Lentils

  1. 1

    Soak the Lentils

Rinse the yellow lentils thoroughly under running water. Soak them in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.

  2. 2

    Cook the Lentils

In a large pot, combine the soaked lentils and 4 cups of water. Add turmeric powder and salt. Bring it to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Simmer for about 30-40 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and cooked through.

Making the Tadka

  1. 3

    Prepare the Tadka

In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and allow them to crackle.

  2. 4

    Add Aromatics

Add minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chilies to the pan. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until the garlic is golden brown.

  3. 5

    Add Onion

Add the finely chopped onion to the pan. Cook until the onions are translucent and lightly browned.

  4. 6

    Combine with Lentils

Once the lentils are cooked, pour the tadka over them. Sprinkle garam masala and mix well. Let it simmer for an additional 5 minutes.

Serving

  1. 7

    Serve the Dal Tadka

Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or flatbread.
