Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Soak the Legumes

Rinse the split yellow peas and red lentils under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak them in water for at least 30 minutes, then drain.

  2. 2

    Chop the Vegetables

Finely chop the onion, mince the garlic, and grate the ginger. Set aside.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Sauté the Aromatics

In a large pot, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds. Then, add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent.

  2. 4

    Add Garlic and Ginger

Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger. Cook for an additional 2 minutes until fragrant.

  3. 5

    Combine Spices

Add the turmeric powder, coriander powder, and garam masala to the pot. Stir well to coat the onions, and cook for another minute.

  4. 6

    Add Legumes and Water

Add the soaked split yellow peas and red lentils to the pot, followed by the 6 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and cover the pot.

  5. 7

    Simmer

Let the soup simmer for about 30-35 minutes, or until the peas and lentils are tender. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  6. 8

    Season the Soup

Once cooked, season the soup with salt and black pepper to taste. You can also adjust the consistency by adding more water if it's too thick.

Serving

  1. 9

    Garnish and Serve

Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with freshly chopped cilantro. Serve with lemon wedges on the side for an extra zing.
