Method
Treatment Setup
- 1
Room preparation
Set massage table in center of treatment room, adjust height for therapist ergonomics. Cover table with bottom sheet and top sheet, place disposable face cradle cover on headrest. Lay bolster under knees for supine client and small bolster for neck support. Light two candles or turn on LED candles; set low, calming lighting. Set ambient music at low volume.
- 2
Temperature, towels and sanitation
Ensure room temperature is comfortable (around 22–24°C). Heat two hand towels (towel warmer or hot water) and place near table. Have sanitizing spray/hand sanitizer accessible; therapist sanitize hands before client contact.
- 3
Sound setup
Place Tibetan singing bowl near the head/shoulder area and crystal bowl or gong near the feet (both within easy reach, not on the table). Put tuning forks and chime where therapist can reach without leaving the table. Test bowls and speaker volume quickly to confirm gentle resonance levels.
Aromatherapy Blends
- 4
Consultation and blend selection
Begin with a short intake (2–3 minutes): ask about allergies, skin sensitivities, pregnancy, medical conditions, current medications, and the client's intention (renewal, rest, balance, recovery from soreness, or heart/connection). Present the five Tara blends (Renew, Rest, Balance, Recover, Love) and read the primary notes. Confirm chosen blend.
- 5
Dilution safety note
For full-body Swedish massage use a 1–1.5% dilution. With 40 ml carrier oil, target 8–12 drops total of essential oil. The provided blended recipes are ~10 drops total (≈1.25% dilution), safe for most adults — adjust lower if client is sensitive.
- 6
Prepare the chosen blend
Place 40 ml carrier oil into the glass mixing bottle or bowl. Add the essential oil drops for the chosen blend exactly as listed in the ingredients section (for example, Renew: Lavender 4 drops, Bergamot 3 drops, Lemon 3 drops). Gently roll or stir the bottle to mix. Label the bottle with the blend name and time prepared. Set aside a few drops (1–2) to add to the diffuser separately if using.
- 7
Diffuser use
If using the electric diffuser, add 3 drops of the same chosen blend (or 2 drops if client is sensitive) to the diffuser with the manufacturer's recommended water level. Start the diffuser at low intermittent mode 2–3 minutes before the client enters, maintaining subtle scent (avoid strong direct inhalation).
Massage Oil & Tools
- 8
Warm the oil
Place the blended 40 ml massage oil bottle in a warm towel or oil warmer for 3–5 minutes until it is slightly warm to the touch (aim for body temperature, ~37°C). Test temperature on your inner wrist before applying to client.
- 9
Prepare therapist's oil bowl
Pour 15–25 ml of the warmed blended oil into a small bowl the therapist will hold during the massage (refill as needed from the main bottle). Keep the main bottle covered to preserve aroma.
- 10
Swedish Massage Sequence
- 11
Initial grounding & arrival (2–3 minutes)
Invite the client to lie prone (face down) on the table. Place a bolster under the ankles. Place a folded towel lightly over the upper back. Take a moment of stillness with the client: place hands gently on the client's shoulders (without oil) for 30–60 seconds to attune and set intention. Communicate approximate pressure preference again.
- 12
Back work — foundational effleurage and petrissage (20 minutes)
Warm hands with oil and begin long, flowing effleurage strokes from the lower back up to the shoulders using the palms (5 minutes) to distribute oil and warm tissues. Transition to petrissage (kneading) along the paraspinals and upper trapezius (8–10 minutes), using thumbs and fingers for deeper releases where appropriate. Use circular friction to work through adhesions at the shoulder blades (3–4 minutes). Finish with broad effleurage to soothe and integrate (2 minutes). Check in briefly about pressure.
- 13
Glutes, hamstrings and legs (15 minutes)
Move to the gluteal area and use gliding effleurage and cross-fiber petrissage (4 minutes). Work down the posterior thigh with long effleurage strokes toward the heart (3 minutes), then knead the hamstrings and perform light muscle strokes on calves (6 minutes). Use tapotement sparingly over the gastrocnemius for stimulation if client requests (1–2 minutes).
- 14
Arms, hands and shoulders (10 minutes)
Turn client's arm outward and apply effleurage from wrist to shoulder, then knead the forearm musculature and use gentle thumb pressure along the flexor and extensor groups (5 minutes per arm combined). Finish with gentle compression and light stretches of the shoulder joint.
- 15
Neck and upper shoulders (7 minutes)
With client prone, use both hands to perform gentle kneading along the cervical paraspinals and upper traps, avoiding direct pressure on the vertebrae. Use light traction and small circular motions at the base of the skull. Keep communication about pressure for neck work.
- 16
Face, scalp and feet (5–8 minutes)
If client consents, perform a light facial glide using minimal oil (forehead, cheeks, jawline) and perform gentle stellate strokes along the scalp for relaxation (3–4 minutes). For feet, use effleurage and circular thumb work on the plantar surface and ankles (2–4 minutes).
- 17
Final integration & supine transition (3 minutes)
Finish with broad, calming effleurage strokes across the back and shoulders. Ask client to roll onto their side; place a bolster to support knees. Re-cover them with the blanket and reposition face cradle if necessary, then help them transition to supine (face up) for front-of-body work if included.
- 18
Anterior work (optional, 10 minutes)
If included in the service and with consent, perform light effleurage on the anterior thighs, gentle circular motions on the abdomen (avoid deep pressure), and on the chest area use broad, feathering strokes. Keep pressure lighter on the front of the body.
Sound Healing Instruments
- 19
- 20
Integrate sound during transitions
Between major massage areas (after back work, before leg work, before supine transition), use a gentle sweep of the crystal bowl or a few soft strikes on the chime to signify transition. Keep volume low so sound complements touch rather than overpowering it.
- 21
Targeted vibrational support
When addressing areas of tension (upper traps, lumbar area), lightly play a tuning fork nearby (but not directly on skin) and allow the harmonic vibration to be felt subtly. Use the Tibetan bowl at 1–2 soft strokes near the sacrum or shoulder blade region to support tissue release; time bowls to occur during broad effleurage or between petrissage sets.
- 22
Final sustained sound bath (5–10 minutes)
At the end of manual work, have the client supine, cover eyes with eye pillow and begin a gentle sound bath: slow, sustained strokes on the crystal bowl with intermittent Tibetan bowl strikes and soft chime touches. Maintain consistent, soothing resonance for 5–10 minutes while therapist steps back or places hands lightly on the client (if consented). Allow the sound to guide the client's resting state toward stillness.
Client Comfort & Aftercare
- 23
Gentle reawakening
After the final sound bath, wait 60–90 seconds, then slowly reduce volume. Remove eye pillow and gently retouch the client's shoulders and arms with light strokes to reorient them. Invite the client to breathe deeply and roll onto their side before slowly sitting up (therapist assists as needed).
- 24
Post-treatment care & hydration
Offer the client room-temperature water (250 ml) and a cup of herbal tea. Provide the note card with the blend name, essential oil components, dilution used, and any aftercare tips (drink water, avoid heavy exercise for 24 hours). Apply a light dab of aftercare balm (5 ml) to areas the client requests for ongoing moisture.
- 25
Clean-up and reset
Sanitize instruments and bowls according to protocol, launder sheets and towels, and wipe the massage table and cradle. Refill the small oil bowl from the main bottle if more sessions follow; discard or properly store any blended oil beyond single-session use in a labeled, sealed bottle (date/time). Reset diffuser and sound instruments for the next treatment.
- 26
Documentation
Record the session details in client notes: chosen blend, dilution (40 ml carrier with ~10 drops = ~1.25%), pressure levels used, areas worked, any client responses or contraindications observed, and recommended follow-up.
