Tools & Disposables

1

Set up treatment station

Sanitize workspace. Lay out disposable towels, fan brush, antiseptic wipes, blade, cotton pads and post-care products within reach. Keep a trash receptacle nearby for used disposables.

2

Personal protection

Put on a fresh pair of nitrile gloves before touching the client's face or any product to maintain hygiene.

3

Blade check

Inspect the single-edge dermaplaning blade package to confirm sterility and that the blade is unused. Keep antiseptic wipes ready to sanitize the blade edge just before use if needed.

Cleansing & Prep Products

4

Remove makeup and initial cleanse

Use 1–2 cotton pads with micellar water (10 ml) to remove makeup and surface oils thoroughly. Follow immediately with a gentle rinse or wipe using the skin-appropriate cleanser (5 ml) to remove any remaining residue. Rinse or remove cleanser with a warm towel or gentle damp cloth.

5

Steam or warm towel

Apply a warm towel or use facial steam for 1–2 minutes to relax skin and slightly open pores, making removal of vellus hair easier. Pat skin dry with a disposable towel.

6

Sanitize skin and blade area

Use one antiseptic wipe to gently cleanse the treatment area (avoid over-wetting skin). Reserve the second antiseptic wipe to briefly disinfect the blade edge immediately before dermaplaning.

7

Apply lubricant

Apply a thin, even layer of a light facial oil or dermaplane lubricant (2 ml) to the area to be treated. The lubricant provides slip and helps the blade glide; do not saturate — trace a light sheen only.

Dermaplaning Procedure

8

Final blade prep

Immediately before starting, use the reserved antiseptic wipe to quickly disinfect the blade edge. Ensure the blade is dry to preserve control.

9

Positioning and tension

Have the client reclined comfortably with head supported. Using your free hand, gently stretch the skin taut in the small treatment zone you will work on (for example, one cheek or the upper lip) — taut skin provides a smooth surface and reduces nicks.

10

Angle and stroke technique

Hold the blade at an approximately 45-degree angle. Using short, gentle upward strokes (away from the face), shave the vellus hair and superficial dead skin in small sections. Keep the strokes light — do not press the blade into the skin. Work methodically: forehead, cheeks, upper lip, chin, jawline and then neck if included. Re-tension the skin as you move.

11

Clear debris frequently

After every few strokes, use the fan brush to sweep away hair and skin debris from the treated area. If needed, wipe the blade on a fresh cotton pad or change the blade if it feels dull or clogged.

12

Avoid contraindicated areas

Do not dermaplane over active cystic acne, inflamed lesions, open wounds, or areas of active rosacea. If such areas are present, skip those spots and proceed around them.

13

Post-pass cleansing

Once dermaplaning is complete across the face, gently remove any remaining lubricant and loosened debris with a warm, damp disposable towel or cotton pad and a light application of micellar water if needed.

Post-treatment Hydration & Protection

14

Apply soothing serum

Dispense the soothing hyaluronic serum (2 ml) into your gloved fingertips and apply in gentle pressing motions across the treated areas to hydrate and calm the skin barrier.

15

Moisturize

Follow immediately with a calming moisturizer (3 ml) suited to the client's skin type, massaging gently to lock in hydration and support barrier recovery.

16

Optional calming step

If the client shows moderate redness or sensitivity, apply a thin layer of aloe vera gel (2 ml) or use the cold compress (1 each) over the face for 1–2 minutes to reduce heat and calm the skin.

17

Sun protection

Finish by applying a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen (5 ml) evenly across all treated areas. Emphasize to the client that freshly dermaplaned skin is more photosensitive and daily SPF is essential.

18

Aftercare advice

Advise the client to avoid strong exfoliants, retinoids, chemical peels and prolonged sun exposure for 48–72 hours. Recommend gentle cleansing and moisturization, and reapply SPF regularly while the skin recovers.
