Preparation & PPE

Method

Preparation & Setup

  1. 1

    Prepare room and PPE

Ensure treatment bed is lined with clean linen and position a clean towel under the client's head. Put on clinician mask and gloves. Place the disposable headband within reach and provide protective eyewear to the client; ask them to remove contact lenses if applicable.

  2. 2

    Set up tools

Place the Dermaflash device, sterile replacement blade cartridge (still in its sterile packaging), disposable tray, gauze, cotton pads, cleanser, micellar water, antiseptic, serums, moisturizer, and sunscreen on a clean trolley or tray in the order you will use them. Start the timer and have a waste bin lined and reachable.

Cleansing & Skin Assessment

  1. 3

    Consultation and contraindication check

Confirm the client's skin history, recent procedures, active acne cysts, open wounds, active rosacea flare, isotretinoin use within past 6–12 months, or known allergies. If any contraindication is present, do not proceed. If clear, explain steps and expected sensations.

  2. 4

    Initial cleanse

Apply 2 pumps of the gentle gel cleanser to dampened hands and cleanse the entire face in gentle, circular motions for 60–90 seconds to remove surface oil and makeup. Remove with a clean towel.

  3. 5

    Tone and degrease

Saturate a cotton pad with 30 ml micellar water or alcohol-free toner and sweep the face to remove residue. Then use a separate cotton pad dampened with 15 ml antiseptic solution (or an antiseptic wipe) to lightly degrease the treatment area, concentrating on zones where hair is present. Allow the skin to air-dry for 20–30 seconds.

  4. 6

    Skin marking and elasticity check

Inspect the skin for texture, moles, elevated lesions, or suspicious areas. Stretch a small area (e.g., cheek) to observe skin laxity and hair direction; dermaplaning works best on taut skin and in the direction of hair growth for safe removal.

Dermaplaning Procedure

  1. 7

    Prepare the Dermaflash device

Open the sterile replacement blade cartridge only when ready. Attach the cartridge to the Dermaflash device according to manufacturer instructions while maintaining sterility. Place the empty sterile wrapper into the disposable tray for later disposal.

  2. 8

    Apply glide serum (optional)

If using the Dermaflash glide serum or 1 pump of light facial oil, dispense a single pump into the disposable spatula and apply a thin, even layer across one treatment zone (for example, one cheek). Do not over-apply; skin should feel slightly slick but not oily. This helps the cartridge glide smoothly.

  3. 9

    Hold and angle

With the client's head supported and skin held taut using your non-dominant hand, hold the Dermaflash device at a ~30-degree angle to the skin. Keep the blade almost flat but slightly tilted so it catches vellus hair and superficial keratin without digging into the skin.

  4. 10

    Short strokes with light pressure

Using short, light strokes in the direction of hair growth, pass the device across the treatment area—cheek, chin, upper lip, and forehead. Work in small sections, re-tensioning the skin with your non-dominant hand. Avoid passing repeatedly over the same spot more than 2–3 times. For delicate areas (upper lip, jawline), use gentler pressure and smaller passes.

  5. 11

    Wipe and inspect frequently

After each zone, use a disposable gauze square to gently wipe away removed hair and stratum corneum. Inspect the area for evenness and any signs of irritation or micro-injury. If any redness is excessive or pinpoint bleeding occurs, stop dermaplaning in that area and treat as per aftercare.

  6. 12

    Complete full-face pass

Continue zone by zone until the full planned treatment area is completed. Replace the blade cartridge if any dragging, dullness, or cross-contamination is suspected (blade is single-use). Place used blade and packaging into the disposable tray and then into the waste bin following local sharps/disposal protocols.

Post-treatment Finishing

  1. 13

    Calm and hydrate

Gently cleanse the treated skin with a damp gauze to remove any residual hair or product. Apply 1 pump of hyaluronic acid serum evenly across the face using a disposable spatula; gently pat to distribute. Follow with 5 ml soothing aloe or barrier gel applied thinly to any areas of redness.

  2. 14

    Optional cooling mask

If desired and the client's skin is not reactive, apply a cooling sheet mask for 7–10 minutes to calm sensitivity. Remove sheet mask and gently pat remaining essence into the skin.

  3. 15

    Moisturize and protect

Apply 1 tsp of a non-comedogenic moisturizer evenly across the face. Finish with 1 tsp of broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen SPF 30–50 to protect the newly exposed skin. Educate the client that sunscreen is essential post-dermaplaning.

  4. 16

    Dispose and clean

Dispose of used gloves, gauze, cotton pads, and the single-use blade cartridge into the waste bin according to local regulations. Clean and disinfect reusable parts of the Dermaflash device per manufacturer instructions and wipe down the treatment area of the trolley.

Aftercare & Client Guidance

  1. 17

    Immediate post-treatment advice

Advise the client that transient redness and slight sensitivity are normal for 24–48 hours. Recommend avoiding retinoids, chemical exfoliants, aggressive scrubs, direct sun exposure, heavy sweating, and hot baths/saunas for 48–72 hours. Use gentle cleanser and hydrating products only during recovery.

  2. 18

    Homecare routine and follow-up

Instruct the client to apply sunscreen daily and a gentle moisturizer twice daily. Recommend hyaluronic serum as needed for hydration. Schedule a follow-up or maintenance dermaplaning every 4–6 weeks if desired, and to contact the clinic if prolonged redness, irritation, or signs of infection occur.
