Instructions for Southern Fried Chicken
- 1
Marinate the Chicken
In a large bowl, combine the buttermilk with salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. Add the chicken pieces, ensuring they are fully submerged. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.
- 2
Prepare the Breading
In a separate bowl, add the all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. Mix well.
- 3
Dredge the Chicken
Remove the chicken from the buttermilk marinade, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge each piece in the seasoned flour mixture, pressing lightly to adhere. Shake off any excess flour.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 5
Fry the Chicken
Carefully add the chicken pieces to the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 12-15 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
- 6
Drain and Serve
Once cooked, remove the chicken from the oil and place on a wire rack or paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot.
