Method
Batter Preparation
- 1
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk together until well combined.
- 2
Add Water
Gradually add the cold water to the dry ingredients while whisking continuously until the batter is smooth and free of lumps. Set aside.
Onion Preparation
- 3
Slice the Onion
Peel the onion and slice it into thick rings. Aim for about 1/4 inch thickness. Separate the rings and set them aside.
Frying
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter into it; if it sizzles, the oil is ready.
- 5
Dunk and Coat
Take each onion ring, dip it into the batter, allowing any excess batter to drip off. Make sure the ring is well-coated.
- 6
- 7
Drain and Serve
Once cooked, remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot.
