Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Sauté the Aromatics

In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped onion, and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the onion becomes translucent and fragrant.

  2. 2

    Add the Tomatoes

Stir in the diced tomatoes into the saucepan. Cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes break down and release their juices.

Seasoning the Sauce

  1. 3

    Season the Mixture

Add the salt, black pepper, dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes, and sugar to the sauce. Stir well to combine and let it simmer on low heat for another 10 minutes.

Finishing Touches

  1. 4

    Add Acid and Freshness

Remove the saucepan from heat. Stir in the balsamic vinegar and fresh basil. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if necessary. Let it sit for a few minutes to meld the flavors before serving.
