Method

Pudding Base Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a medium saucepan, whisk together the granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, and salt until well combined.

  2. 2

    Combine Milk and Egg Yolks

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg yolks until smooth and combined.

  3. 3

    Cook the Pudding Base

Gradually add the milk and egg yolk mixture to the saucepan with the dry ingredients, whisking continuously. Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil (about 5-7 minutes).

  4. 4

    Finish the Pudding

Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the unsalted butter and vanilla extract until melted and smooth. Let the pudding cool slightly.

Assembly

  1. 5

    Layer Ingredients

In a large serving dish or individual cups, start by placing a layer of vanilla wafers at the bottom, followed by a layer of sliced ripe bananas, and then a layer of the prepared pudding.

  2. 6

    Repeat Layers

Repeat the layering process until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of pudding on top.

  3. 7

    Top with Whipped Cream

Spread a generous layer of whipped cream over the top of the pudding layer.

  4. 8

    Chill and Serve

Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight, to allow the flavors to meld. Serve chilled.
