Method
Preparation
- 1
Preshrink fabric
Wash the cotton fabric in warm water, dry, and press flat to remove wrinkles. This minimizes future shrinkage.
- 2
Prepare pattern
Unfold the XL+ shirt pattern, confirm size, and gather all pieces. Ensure you have front, back, sleeves, collar, collar stand, cuffs, placket pieces, and buttons.
Layout & Cutting
- 3
Layout on fabric
Lay out pattern pieces on the fabric following the grainline and fold lines. Secure with pattern weights or pins.
- 4
Mark and cut pieces
Trace pattern pieces and notches onto the fabric using chalk or fabric marker. Cut out all pieces carefully with fabric scissors or a rotary cutter, leaving the recommended seam allowances (usually 5/8 inch / 1.6 cm).
Interfacing & Prep for Collar/Placket
- 5
Apply interfacing
Cut interfacing pieces for collar, collar stand, cuffs, and front placket according to pattern. Fuse to the wrong side of fabric pieces using a hot iron and pressing cloth as required by the interfacing instructions.
Machine Assembly
- 6
Setup machine and seams
Thread machine with a matching color and load a universal needle (size 80/12 to 100/14). Set stitch length to 2.5 mm for standard seams. Use a straight stitch for most of the assembly.
- 7
Construct shoulders
With right sides together, sew the shoulder seams of the front and back pieces. Press the seams open or toward the back.
- 8
Sew side seams
Pin and stitch the side seams from the underarm to the hem. Press seam allowances toward the back.
- 9
Prepare sleeves
Sew the sleeve seams and finish edges as desired. If the pattern includes ease in the sleeve cap, stitch accordingly.
- 10
Attach sleeves to bodice
With right sides together, match notches and sew the sleeves into the armholes. Ease fullness if present and press.
- 11
Assemble collar & collar stand
Construct the collar with its interfaced pieces, sew right sides together, trim and notch seam allowances, turn right side out, and press.
- 12
Attach collar to neckline
Pin and sew the collar to the neckline as per pattern marks. Clip curves and press allowances toward the collar for a clean finish.
- 13
Finish placket
Prepare the front placket pieces and stitch them in place, matching button positions to the corresponding side.
Finishing & Buttons
- 14
Create buttonholes
Mark buttonhole positions on the left front. Sew buttonholes using the machine. Test on scrap fabric first to ensure correct length.
- 15
Attach buttons
Sew buttons on the right front at the marked positions. Use a secure number of stitches and consider a shank button if using a thicker placket.
- 16
Hems and final pressing
Hem sleeves and the bottom of the shirt. Give a final pressing to ensure crisp edges and neat seams.
- 17
Final quality check
Inspect all seams, test button alignment, trim stray threads, and ensure the shirt sits smoothly with proper fit for XL+ sizing.
