Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Steak

Remove the New York strip steak from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before cooking. This helps the meat cook evenly.

  2. 2

    Season the Steak

Pat the steak dry with paper towels. Rub both sides of the steak with olive oil, then season generously with salt and black pepper. If desired, also sprinkle with garlic powder, onion powder, and fresh herbs.

Cooking the Steak

  1. 3

    Preheat the Grill

Preheat your grill to high heat, around 450°F to 500°F (230°C to 260°C). Make sure the grates are clean and lightly oiled.

  2. 4

    Grill the Steak

Place the steak on the hot grill and cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side for medium-rare, 6-7 minutes for medium, or 8-9 minutes for medium-well. Flip the steak halfway through cooking.

  3. 5

    Check Doneness

Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. For medium-rare, aim for 130°F (54°C); for medium, aim for 140°F (60°C); for medium-well, aim for 150°F (65°C).

  4. 6

    Rest the Steak

Once cooked to your liking, remove the steak from the grill and let it rest for at least 5 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute.

Serving

  1. 7

    Plate the Steak

Slice the steak against the grain and serve it on a plate. Optionally, serve with baked potatoes, steamed broccoli, and dinner rolls on the side.
