Method
Preparation
- 1
- 2
Cut Potatoes into Fries
Cut each potato lengthwise into quarters, then cut those quarters into strips about 1/4 inch thick. Try to keep the sizes uniform for even cooking.
- 3
Soak the Potatoes
Place the cut fries in a large bowl of cold water and soak for at least 30 minutes. This helps to remove excess starch and results in crispier fries.
Cooking
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a deep-frying thermometer to check the temperature.
- 5
Dry the Potatoes
After soaking, drain the fries and pat them dry with paper towels. This step is crucial to prevent oil splatter and to ensure they fry properly.
- 6
Fry the Potatoes
Carefully add a handful of dried fries to the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the pot. Fry for about 4-5 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
- 7
Remove and Drain
Use a slotted spoon to remove the fries from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
- 8
Season the Fries
While the fries are still hot, sprinkle with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder to taste. Toss gently to ensure even seasoning.
