Tamale Dough
Method
Tamale Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Dough
In a large bowl, whisk together masa harina, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, beat the vegetable shortening until fluffy. Gradually add the masa mixture to the shortening, alternating with vegetable broth, mixing until combined and a soft dough forms.
- 2
Prepare the Filling
While the dough is resting, prepare your desired filling. This can be shredded chicken, beef, cheese, or vegetables seasoned to taste.
- 3
Assemble the Tamales
Soak corn husks in warm water for about 30 minutes. Take one husk, spread about 2 tablespoons of dough onto the center, add a spoonful of filling, and fold the sides of the husk over the filling. Tie with a strip of husk or kitchen twine.
- 4
Steam the Tamales
Place the tamales upright in a steamer basket. Steam over boiling water for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the masa separates easily from the husks.
- 5
Serve
Allow the tamales to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with salsa or your favorite sauce!
