Method

Preparation Instructions

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together until well combined.

  2. 2

    Incorporate Fat

Add the lard or vegetable shortening to the flour mixture. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. 3

    Add Water

Gradually add warm water to the mixture, stirring until a dough forms. You may need to adjust the water slightly to achieve the right consistency.

  4. 4

    Knead Dough

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 2-3 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 15 minutes.

  5. 5

    Divide and Roll

After resting, divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten it into a disk.

  6. 6

    Cook Tortillas

Heat a dry skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for about 30-45 seconds on each side, or until lightly browned and cooked through. Keep warm in a clean towel.
