Flour Tortilla Ingredients

Method

Instructions for Making Tortillas

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together until well mixed.

  2. 2

    Add Fat

Add the lard or vegetable shortening to the flour mixture. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. 3

    Incorporate Water

Gradually add the warm water to the mixture, stirring with a fork until the dough begins to come together.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 2-3 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    Rest the Dough

Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.

  6. 6

    Roll Out Tortillas

After resting, divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten it with a rolling pin into a thin circle.

  7. 7

    Cook the Tortillas

Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for about 30 seconds on each side, or until lightly browned and cooked through.

  8. 8

    Keep Warm

Place the cooked tortillas in a clean towel to keep warm while you cook the remaining tortillas.
