Ingredients for Zuppa Inglese

Method

Preparation Steps

  1. 1

    Prepare the Milk Custard

In a saucepan, heat the milk and half of the sugar over medium heat until just boiling. In a bowl, whisk together egg yolks, remaining sugar, and cornstarch. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking continuously. Return to the saucepan and cook until thickened. Stir in vanilla extract. Let cool.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Chocolate Custard

Melt the dark chocolate in a bowl over simmering water. Once the milk custard has cooled slightly, stir in the melted chocolate until well combined. Let cool completely.

  3. 3

    Assemble the Dessert

Slice the sponge cake into thin layers. In a large dish, layer sponge cake soaked in Amaretto, followed by milk custard, then chocolate custard. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of chocolate custard.

  4. 4

    Whip the Cream

In a bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Spread the whipped cream over the final layer of chocolate custard. Dust with cocoa powder.

  5. 5

    Chill and Serve

Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours (or overnight) to allow flavors to meld. Serve chilled.
