Method

Meatballs Preparation

  1. 1

    Combine Meatball Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.

  2. 2

    Form Meatballs

Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.

  3. 3

    Brown Meatballs

In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches and brown on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and set aside.

Marinara Sauce Preparation

  1. 4

    Sauté Onions and Garlic

In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of olive oil if needed. Sauté the chopped onion until translucent, about 5 minutes, then add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

  2. 5

    Make the Sauce

Add the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar to the skillet. Stir well and bring to a simmer.

  3. 6

    Add Meatballs

Return the browned meatballs to the skillet, cover, and let simmer for 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

  4. 7

    Finish Sauce

Stir in the chopped basil and adjust seasoning to taste.

Sandwich Assembly

  1. 8

    Prepare Rolls

Slice the sub rolls open and lightly toast them if desired.

  2. 9

    Assemble Sandwiches

Place 2-3 meatballs on each roll, spoon marinara sauce over the meatballs, and top with provolone cheese slices. Sprinkle grated Romano cheese on top.

  3. 10

    Melt Cheese

Place the sandwiches under a broiler for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  4. 11

    Serve

Remove from the broiler, let cool slightly, then serve warm.
