Method

Main Dish Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Noodles

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Cook the thick round noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Beef Mixture

In a skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef, chopped onion, and minced garlic. Cook until the beef is browned and the onions are translucent. Drain excess fat.

  3. 3

    Add Tomato Sauce and Seasoning

To the beef mixture, add the tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine and simmer for about 10 minutes.

  4. 4

    Mix Ricotta and Eggs

In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, eggs, and a pinch of salt. Mix well.

  5. 5

    Layer the Dish

In a greased baking dish, layer half of the cooked noodles, followed by half of the beef mixture, half of the ricotta mixture, and a sprinkle of mozzarella. Repeat the layers, finishing with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.

  6. 6

    Bake

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Marinara Sauce Preparation

  1. 7

    Heat the Olive Oil

In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat.

  2. 8

    Add Tomatoes and Seasoning

Once oil is heated, add canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.

  3. 9

    Simmer the Sauce

Let the sauce simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened. Adjust seasoning to taste.

  4. 10

    Finish with Fresh Basil

Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before serving.
