Method

Baklava Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 2

    Prepare the Phyllo Dough

Thaw the phyllo dough according to package instructions. Once thawed, unroll and cover with a damp towel to keep from drying out.

  3. 3

    Make the Nut Mixture

In a mixing bowl, combine chopped walnuts, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon. Mix well and set aside.

  4. 4

    Layer the Phyllo

Melt the unsalted butter in a saucepan. Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Layer 8 sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter before adding the next. Sprinkle a thin layer of the nut mixture over the top.

  5. 5

    Repeat Layers

Continue layering phyllo sheets (brushing with butter) and the nut mixture until all the nut mixture is used, finishing with 8 layers of phyllo on top.

  6. 6

    Cut the Baklava

Use a sharp knife to cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes, making sure to cut through to the bottom.

  7. 7

    Bake the Baklava

Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes or until the baklava is golden brown and crisp.

  8. 8

    Prepare the Syrup

While baklava is baking, combine water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

  9. 9

    Pour Syrup Over Baklava

Once the baklava is finished baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the syrup over the hot baklava. Let it soak for at least 2 hours.

Serving

  1. 10

    Warm the Baklava

Before serving, slightly warm the baklava in the oven for about 5-10 minutes at 300°F (150°C).

  2. 11

    Serve with Ice Cream

Place a piece of warm baklava on a plate, top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and drizzle with chocolate syrup as desired.
